We all know that good oral hygiene keeps your teeth looking clean and shiny, but did you know that it’s also essential to your overall health? Recent studies have found that gum disease can lead to poor heart and lung health, and it certainly has a negative effect on your dental health. Main Street Dental offers gentle scaling and ultra-sonic cleaning to keep your gums as strong and healthy as possible, helping you correct small problems early, before they become big problems. We also take the time to detect cavities early, when treating them is simpler, gentler and more affordable. Your 6 month check will consist of:
- Oral Cancer screening
- Oral Hygiene Instruction
- Hand Scaling and/or Ultrasonic scaling
- Ultrasonic scaling
- Polish
Oral Cancer Screening
As part of your routine dental exam, Dr. Kujak will conduct an oral cancer screening exam. More specifically, your he will feel for any lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, face, and oral cavity. When examining your mouth, Dr. Kujak will look for any sores or discolored tissue as well as check for any signs and symptoms mentioned above.
Oral Hygiene Instruction
Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent dental decay and gum disease. Your Hygienist will assess your individual needs at each appointment and advise you on the best methods to prevent oral disease and to maintain oral health.
Scaling
Removing calculus and other deposits on the teeth using hand-held dental instruments. Ultrasonic cleaning is a painless method that provides patients with a more thorough cleaning compared to a manual cleaning by hand. The tip of the scaler is thin. When held against the tooth, sound waves bounce off the tooth and cause the tartar and plaque to break up. The sound waves works so well that even hardened plaque, also called calculus, breaks up. The water coming from the scaler then washes the broken debris away. The tip of the scaler does not damage the enamel of the tooth as traditional hand-scaling methods. Using only the vibrations from the scaler, patients can expect a painless process.
Polish
Tooth polishing is the act of smoothing the tooth surface. The purpose of polishing is to make it difficult for plaque to accumulate on the tooth surface area. Common practice is to use a prophy cup — a small motorized rubber cup—along with an abrasive polishing compound which is available in a variety of flavors.
Deep Cleaning – Perio Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. This procedure is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. You may be a candidate for scaling and root planning if your gums have started to pull away from your teeth or the roots of the teeth have tartar deposits on them.
Dental X-rays
Dental X-rays are an important tool in diagnosing and treating dental problems. At Main Street Dental, we offer our patients cutting-edge Digital Radiography, or X-rays, which emits up to 80% less radiation than traditional X-rays and produces an image nearly instantly!
Sealants
Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and usually last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.
